WHY I RAN THE GOBI IN 2009

We are all trying to unearth opportunities to handle this economic “reset” and re-frame to a positive mindset.

In my case, I decided to start running. First, to get fit and clear-headed to handle the current reality. Then I started to run some more. Then a lot. And now I run to try to create an impact for some of the 250,000 people who have lost their job since October 08 who also need to reset. I have registered to run the 250km Gobi Desert Race this coming June in an attempt to raise $25,000 and cause a multiplier impact for every dollar raised. Not your typical 10K! And my focus is to help professionals who drive the economy, a peer to a peer.

So old news; the economic climate is relentless; business is challenging, and the unemployment level continues to rise. While our Mandrake (search) and wwwork (staffing) businesses are re-tooling to prosper in the current business reality, NEXCareer, our career transition services business is flourishing. As CEO of the businesses I have a unique vantage point to the cost of job losses and their impact on individuals. While I witnessed apprehension and frustration in 1990-92 and 2001-03, I now see panic, despair, and some hopelessness, which frequently is spilling over into family lives. The uncertainty and the level of stress on individuals in transition is higher than ever, compounded by savings erosion and tighter credit.

Looking for talent and helping individuals in transition are both part of my everyday role. I am passionate about it and I thought I could do more. This is where you come in. While you are no doubt often solicited for charitable contributions, I think you will find this “ask” different. I propose to raise money for an organization helping the unemployed while offering YOU the chance to personally impact someone you know who needs career transition services and help enable them to move on with their life. I want to play my role in migrating the background conversation to the positive foundation of hope, possibility, and opportunity.

The Plan
1. I take on a big, frightening challenge.
2. You can help with a pledge.
3. We collectively help people looking for work or projects.

NEXCareer Gobi Desert Race for Nabs

The Challenge
I have taken on the most complex challenge I could find to first raise an eyebrow, and hopefully raise support: I will run the 250km Gobi Desert Race, starting June 14, 2009. The Gobi race is in Mongolia/Northern China. Gobi is part of the desert series which includes Atacama, Sahara, and Antarctica (and ranked second most challenging athletic event in the world by Time Magazine – my recent steroid use disqualified me from entering the Tour de France…). I will run 6 marathons in 5 days, in 40 degree desert heat weather with 25 pounds on my back (food, clothes, gear). 200 other competitors are expected; fewer will finish. The challenge is well beyond my current capabilities; and raising funds will keep me focused on finishing to help professionals going through a rough time.

The Pledge
I decided to focus my efforts on a specific segment of industry professionals that is incredibly hard hit. I chose to raise money for a charitable organization called The National Advertising Benevolent Society (Nabs), that provides personal, family and career assistance to marketing, media, and communication industry professionals and family members when they are in need. Too frequently, when the economy shrinks, these industries/functions are the first ones downsized. Thousands have been laid off in the last few weeks already. No surprise that Nabs caseload has grown in recent years and in 2009 is expected have their largest demand since their launch in 1983. Nabs will provide a full tax receipt for donations over $50. I am hoping to raise $25,000 to benefit 100 families.

The Benefits
In return you can multiply the impact of your pledge. For all pledges at or above $100, I offer you Career Transition Services vouchers through NEXCareer, our leading Toronto based career transition company. You can gift the services to a family member, a friend, someone downsized recently who either wasn't offered career transition help, or with lapsed outplacement coverage, with experience in any sector of the economy. If you have no need for the services, we will offer them on your behalf to individuals in need who can’t afford it, designating you as the donor. We hope to deliver 500+ workshops to help people looking for work to support their job search strategies and tactics.

And priceless, you get to laugh at my expense as I suffer in the desert!

If you would like to pledge me, just reply to me and I will handle this directly. If you know of a runner who should hear about this, please send it to them. If you know someone who is thinking about getting fitter, then who knows, this may inspire them to get running too. I will launch a link to a website soon; your pledge will of course be acknowledged.

Thanks for taking a couple of minutes to read this. I know we are all inundated with emails and solicitations.

Very sincerely,

Stefan
